The Berne Union

The Berne Union, or officially, the International Union of Credit & Investment Insurers, is the leading international organization and community for the export credit and investment insurance industry. The Berne Union has more than 50 member companies spanning the globe. They share a Secretariat based in London.

The Berne Union actively facilitates cross-border trade by supporting international acceptance of sound principles in export credits and foreign investments and by providing a forum for professional exchanges among its members.

Our Expertise

Berne Union member organizations, from the public and private sector, support exports and/or investments to highly developed and emerging markets. They do this by providing insurance or guarantees to protect exporting companies, investors and banks against political and/or commercial risks.

Consistent with the Berne Union's objective to work for the international acceptance of sound underwriting principles, Berne Union members are committed to conduct their business in a manner that contributes to the stability and expansion of global trade on a sustainable basis.

Berne Union members play an important role in supporting international trade flows, be it for trade finance or for the financing of large-scale projects. In engaging in these activities, they often act in cooperation with other international financial institutions involved in the supporting the successful development of world trade.

History

The Berne Union has a long history dating back to 1934 when private and state export credit insurers from France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom founded the organisation. They had their first meeting in Berne, Switzerland, thus the name the Berne Union. The name often leads to the misconception that the Secretariat is be located in Berne - this is not the case, the Secretariat has based in London since the 1970's (previously in Paris).

Contrary to popular belief, The Berne Union has always been made up of both public and private companies.
